Alright, What’s the Deal with Poutine?

Poutine is so ingrained in popular culture it’s hard to imagine a Canada without it. A trifecta of delicious ingredients: crispy French fries, savory gravy and melted cheesy- goodness.

Invented in Quebec in the 1950’s, poutine started as a local specialty but is now eaten around the world. A messy snack, you’ll need a fork to eat it. The standard, traditional version of poutine is the fries smothered with beef gravy and cheese curds but many places offer additional toppings. One restaurant in Montreal, Dirty Dogs, offers an extensive menu with ALL the fixings: pulled pork, Dr. Pepper chili, kimchi, sour cream, coleslaw, bacon, caramelized onions, maple syrup or guacamole, the choice is yours! All the flavors come together for the perfect bite. The waitstaff here also wears shirts that read: “Make Poutine Great Again” which is kinda funny.

An expert on this dish, Canadian author Charles-Alexandre Theoret, deems poutine as “the new fast food Queen”. He mentions that the fries must be crispy, gravy should be thick and tasty and the cheese curds should squeak. Apparently, you should be able to hear the cheese when you bite into them..

Poutine has become a delicacy and if you ever make your way to Canada, you’re gunna have to try it for yourself!
