What the Franc?

It’s not just the mountains that are steep.

Majestic views, delicious cheese fondues, decadent chocolate and precision watches – but it all comes at a cost! I remember I almost dropped dead when I purchased an $8 hot chocolate.

Switzerland's official currency is the Swiss franc. Although Euros may be accepted at some establishments, the exchange rate is likely to be unfavorable.

After doing some more research, I’ve found that countless sources have ranked Switzerland on a list of the most expensive countries to visit – a few of those sources rating it #1! Here, you can eat the most expensive Big Mac in the world for $8.50. A movie ticket is around $22.83 Because Switzerland has one of the best, most densely covered and efficient public transport systems in the world, a ticket to use one these services doesn’t come cheap either.

If you’re thinking maybe you can save some money in a hostel, you can but it’s still around 35-40 Euro for a bed! You can keep travel costs down, of course, by choosing the cheaper accommodation, participating in free activities like hiking rather than any extreme excursion and cooking your own food.

You’ll need to spend a pretty penny on your stay in Switzerland but don’t let it deter you! Everyone deserves to shred some fresh powder on the Swiss Alps - just gutta bring your wallet!
